Different types of investments also meet two levels of risk tolerance: high risk and low risk.

Conservative investors usually invest cash. This means they place their money in interest-bearing savings accounts, money market accounts, mutual funds, U.S. Treasury bills, and certificates of deposit. These are very safe investments and grow over a long period of time. These are also low-risk investments.

Moderate investors usually invest in cash and bonds, and may dabble in the stock market. Moderate investing may involve low or moderate risk. Moderate investors also tend to invest in real estate, as long as it is low-risk.

Aggressive investors tend to invest most of their investments in the stock market, which poses a greater risk. They also tend to invest in commercial projects, as well as high-risk real estate. For example, if an aggressive investor invests his money in an old apartment building and then invests more money in renovating the property, he is taking a risk. They hope to rent the apartments for more money than they are currently worth or sell the entire property to make a profit on their initial investment. In some cases this works well and in others it doesn't. It's a risk.
